How to download Twitch VODs
With Twitch’s VOD feature, fans of your stream can watch recordings of past live streams when you’re offline. Unfortunately, these records expire after some time and are deleted automatically. So maybe it’s not a bad idea to download them and either keep them on your own computer or upload them to another video service like Youtube. In this article, we will take a closer look at the subject.
In general, downloading a video is possible until it deletes itself. How much time you have depends on your account. Normal users usually have 14 days, but affiliates and partners can still download their records up to 60 days after the original stream.
For streamers How to download your own recordings
If you want to save a video from your own stream, this is possible at any time (in the given time frame). Of course, the video must also be recorded by Twitch. To enable this, select Settings → Channel on the Dashboard and activate the automatic saving of your live streams with «Store Past Broadcasts». All future broadcasts will then be automatically added to your videos. In the video manager (Dashboard→ Videos) you can download your recordings via the link below the preview image.
It is also possible to use another option if your streaming software allows simultaneous recordings of your broadcasts (or if you use a capture card with a similar feature). In this case you can simultaneously record your stream and then edit it and upload it to Youtube or Twitch. This also has the advantage that it doesn’t matter which resolution the stream has.
For viewers & followers How to download videos from other streamers
Unfortunately, it is not possible to download videos from other streamers in the way described above. However, there are various software solutions that support this, such as Twitch Leecher. But these are third-party applications that are not connected to Twitch in any way. Also note that you are not allowed to upload the purchased video footage because you do not have the required rights to the video. If the permission of the streamer is given and he doesn’t violate any other copyrights in the video, a reupload on Youtube is no problem.
Using Twitch Leecher as an example, we will show you how to download videos from other streamers. First you have install the tool. A simple installer can be found on the official Twitch Leecher page on GitHub. After installing Twitch Leecher, open the tool and copy the url of the desired video into the empty field under Search → New Search. Then click on Search. Now your selected video should appear in the tool’s interface, including a download button. If you press this button, you can set resolution, file name, start and end points for your download and some other options for your video. When everything is set, click on Download and shortly after you will find the video in the selected folder.
