After Fortnite Report: Pro7 is being criticized
Actually, we thought the “violent games” debate had been dead for years and the media would now take a more cautious approach to this difficult topic. Far from it: A few days ago the private broadcaster ProSieben reported about the popular computer game Fortnite Battle Royale in the news magazine “Newstime”. In the two-minute report, words such as “slaughter”, “shooting down” and “enjoying the killing scenario” were used once again. We are now going to take a closer look at the report and the shitstorm it caused.
In the report, ProSieben focusses on the concerns of youth activists. They especially criticize the fact that a much more violent version than the singleplayer version “Save the World” is available on the Internet – for free and without age restrictions. The game is described as “wild slaughter” in the children’s room and on schoolyards. Especially the use of such negative expressions made many fans furious. Several (mainly german) statements were posted on Twitter and YouTuber also spoke out. Here are some examples:
Sad how inappropriate & wrong statements are taken out of context to create sensational scaremongering among parents, explanations? @welt @sat1 @ProSieben @NewsPaule An objective pedagogical assessment of #Fortnite #FortniteBattleRoyale you can find herehttps://t.co/eLoMh5QkbR— Linda Scholz (@LinScholz) March 14, 2018
The german YouTuber VaniTy published a statement from a gamer’s point of view. In it, he not only deals with the concerns of parents and youth protectors, but also explains how these can be resolved by a simple conversation.
The speaker of the Special Department for Youth Media Culture NRW, Linda Scholz, was also interviewed in the Newstime report. However, according to her own statements, her statements were completely taken out of context. The department then published a correction and dissociated itself from the context of the report. From the interview with her speaker, due to moderation and editing with further material, “a context emerged that had not been intended by the Special Department for Youth Media Culture NRW”.
As passionate gamers we are used to seeing our beloved hobby misrepresented by the media. And as usual the subjective and poorly researched reporting by ProSieben made gamers furious. It will take a while before gaming, streaming and eSports reach all levels of society, but we are on the right track (check out our article on this topic) and won’t let such an unkind little report spoil our mood.
